The Endocannabinoid System, or ECS, regulates and controls many of our most critical functions, such as pain control, inflammatory response, immune response, sleep, and emotions. The ECS is a vast network of chemical signals and cellular receptors found throughout our brains and bodies, including our largest organ – our skin. Cannabinoid receptors continuously regulate our bodies by helping to increase or decrease activity in whatever system needs to be adjusted, always working to keep our systems in balance. Our bodies produce endocannabinoid molecules to stimulate these receptors, similar to the molecules found in the Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) plant. The first endocannabinoid discovered was named anandamide after the Sanskrit word for bliss.
